Urgent> help plz

Post by maxxair » Sat Mar 27, 2010 1:33 pm

Hey All, My friend Leo is having dramas with the EJ20T Brumby I built him. Its went fine for a few months, then it would stop on the road, and either start again soon, or the next morning, or the next.... Quite annoying for him.

This last time it slept on the side of the road for a few days as it just wouldnt go. "TAXI!!", "TOWTRUCK!"

So its back at mine for Warranty Job, and I got it to run, then it cutout.

The only code it throws is 12 (starter circuit.)

Can anyone please help me out here. what's so important with the starter circuit, and would this be related to the cutout???

anyone had similar probs?? all advice glady accepted. cheers guys, Rohan Maxim.
Cheers, Rohan M.

Sounded like my ute did to me (although not EJ20T). It sounds like an electrical problem and the error code is just there trying to put you off the scent. It turned out to be one crimp (down with rachet crimpers and all) had busted internally thus causing it to drop out the fuel pump randomly. You couldn't see it from the outside. That was a fun day i can assure you... lol

What does it do when it won't start? Does it turn over? Does it smell like it is getting fuel? Is it getting spark and at the right time? Does it run hot before hand? Basically any other information on the symptoms. :)

probaly useless info ,but had this problem once on a ef falcon ,the harmonic balancer was rubbing on the crank angle sensor , ran when cold for a little while than just stop ,let it cool than off it would go ,,we could also pour water on the harmonic balancer and cool it and the car would run ,,,,as said it was a ford so probaly no use ,but never know ,,,,khanacross

Cam or crank angle sensor fault? Sometimes they dont log a code.

yup, It goes ok. Itook it for a spin today about half an hour, no probs. when playing up, It kicks over, on the first spin, it fires, momentarily, then will wind till the batterys flat. I assume no fuel. hmmm. one of those mystery ones perhaps, it runs good, so i assume the Crank and cam angle sensors are ok, they are clean. FuxMe. perhaps the Fuel pumps nearly rattus. it is quite noisy, but works ok?? hmm.

You really need to get a fuel pressure gauge on it to eliminate that. But sounds like cam or crank to me. They go great until they heat up then instantly the car will die. If its fuel pump it will generally lose power, cough and splutter until it conks out.

Try checking all the earths. One thing i have learn't since starting to play with the ej's and ea injected motors is, the earths are almost the most important part of the whole system. One earth that is night quite right, and it all goes to shit.

My guess without seeing it first hand would be the Ignition Relay (babyshit yellow colour) and also any earths to the engine and ECU.

yea, thanks guys. I have it with MY ign relay and fuelpump relay and it seems to go alright. I gave it a bit of strap today, and it would have been well warm, but im not ruling out those sensors either. hasnt played up while ive driven it. typical hey.

It now shows code 12 (starter) and code 33 (speed sensor) hmm. interesting. where is the conbination meter. anyone know?? (I have a gregorys EFI and ENGINE MANAGEMENT book 1,2,3,4. but its kinda vague)

There is no speed sensor on the brumbys unless you have converted the dash (combination meter) over to the long Touring Wagon dash type, you can fit a speed sensor in the speedo cable. I used to get them from a place called AISAT but not sure if they still do them??. As for the starter circuit I'm not 100% sure (check with Dave - Subarino) but it sounds like the ECU is missing the wire from the ignition key (to tell the ECU when you are cranking the engine).
