Sloppy shifter

I've got a tex with a sloppy shifter,
what causes and fixes this?
the gearbox? linkages?
springs?

yep the little nylon bushes in the linkage. very quick / easy to change. also available at some auto parts stores but might be hard to find, best bet is subaru.

gearbox stays in.
easy depends entirely on the individual's skill and experience level but I'd rate it 9 out of 10 for ease. have a look at your Haynes or Gregories book for a diagram of the linkage to see where the bushes are.
Pretty much you just unbolt the linkage and where the "joints" are there are little nylon bushes which practically fall out. Just replace them with the new ones and bolt back together.
