85-89 RX and L series owners look in please

Post by steptoe » Thu Aug 27, 2009 1:41 pm

I need a volunteer WHOA, WHOA, STAY PLEASE to pull fuse number four and six, one at a time to see what it isolates. One diagram I have shows 6 is for one thing then later another diagram claims it is fuse 4.

I wanna see what fuse stops the following
1.clock
2. horn
3. cig lighter
4. tail lights park circuit - does it also do dash lights at same time?

Fuse #4 is fourth one from the top left row, six is two further along. I think there may be a difference between years so I need 1985,6 but a comparo of later L's would be appreciated.

I know my fuse sticker comes from my 88 wagon built Nov 87, and thought sticker was same, but it claims fuse 6 is tail lights and licence plate lights but they work fine with fuse 6 gone. Every time I try a fuse in 6 it blows. I test with multimeter or test light the top side of this fuse socket is where power goes out the fuse - at the moment it is a good earth which is why fuse is blowing. Gotta find this short.

I have no horns. So gonna look there

Your results will be appreciated

Jonno

I would help
But mines a 1990

I also have no horn but its not a fuse issue (my momo wheel doesn't have the right connections to hook the horn up)

Bear in mind that the 1985-1987.5 (series 1, 3 plug) models have different wiring to 1987.5-1994 (series 2, 4 plug)

on my march 87 rx...

it says 4 is for "Tail Licence Illumi", 6 is for "Heater", Horn is under 3 - ie "Hazard Clock Horn"

I have replaced my 4 with a 20A fuse because it kept on blowing when I had a trailer connected

thanks guys, keep it coming, the differences are screwing with my mind at the moment. Mine is complianced 3/87 but the first B in BROB part of the VIN indicates it is 1986 built. I seem to recall flogging sticker off 88 wagon to replace either no sticker or crappy hard to read one - thort I'd check it if I did swap. This fuse #6 powers up indicator combo switch. Each time I touch fuse in indicator or hazrd relays would click n buzz. Disconnected combo harness stopped the relays buzz, earth short is still there. Horns - think their power supply {as earth switched} may have earthed_ on body. Pull headlights to check the conns.

The facelift occured in 1988. You can check if your car is the facelifted quickly one by (generally) looking at front indicator lights. If they are all orange, then its pre facelift. If only the middle bit is orange, then it post. Also, the instrument cluster buttons would be all silver for pre facelift (not silver with black surrounds). Sounds like your car is pre facelift.

I got the genuine service manual with full wiring diagrams for 1988, 1989 and 1990 models. I'll scan them on Sat if you like.

Thanks for the offer. I have the factory diagrams for my model. As you know it involves reading one map, flick thru to find the colours and more detailed diagram and the way I have been interpreting it causes some confusion in the hurry to fix this. Fuse #6 defintiely looks like horn direct power supply no relay on power in side. It also looks to be the supply for the now out of commission auto selection gadgetry for wipers, kickdown and brakes circuits.

I'll get there.

and have found a diagram mainly relating to all the automatic selection of 4WD selection governed by braking, kickdown or wipers detected electrically when dash switch on.

This involves:
1.0 back cancel relay to undo 4WD when in reverse gear. found this on a bracket that shares the bonnet release screws, sits above, can get wet if screen leaks or rust leaks. Metal relay unti with four wires

2.0 auto 4WD relay found it close by NOT above glovebox lock with green plug, round relay light all headlight relays

3.0 auto 4WD switch in dash next to light switch

4.0 4WD checker unit, mounted behind dash beside radio hole on driver side behind the funny slotted vent spot. Black plastic has its name on it :)

5.0 Kickdown switch - all that remains is its connector I suppose as switch went on manual conversion

It shows Oz only Fuse#6 with the only one wire I find there is listed correctly as red/white trace. It has further junctions not associated with this circuit ending in ~ symbols. If the short is beyond these ~ symbols I do not know but it looks as if I can just leave fuse #6 out and cut wire at back to prevent further grief until I work out what else important things run off fuse #6 .........which reads hazards, clock and horn which may explain the ~ in the circuit diagram. Clock not work in L Series very often reliably, not in there, hazards can wait, horns will be a rewire so fuse 6 almost sorted I hope. Noticed a relationship with fuse 12 in diagram ...ah shudder....
