No Hi/Lo

Post by krakatinny » Wed Aug 05, 2009 9:48 pm

Howdy Subby buffs, can anyone here tell me if Subaru actually made the Forrester with 5sp gearbox with Hi/Lo in the Turbo models [mid 2000 vintage] i do not think i have ever seen one with Hi/Lo, if they dont then why not? Just trying to sort this out before i puchase my first Subaru and find out that they actually exist, cheers.

No none of the GT turbo Manual Forester came with Dual range (hi/lo) my guess subaru didnt think the dual range gearboxes would last behind the turbo motor. but in saying that i have been running one for 2 years in my turbo lib.

My sentiments exactly Captain Obvious, Subaru just did not trust Aussies and boost. Did you change the whole gearbox over or just the hi/lo transfer section? thanks - :???:Mark.

Nah they didn't, there is no dual range behind turbo'ed model Subarus. The reason is why that Subaru had some extensive testing and they've blown up low range gearing behind turbo, hence that is why they don't sell dual range. You can still fit one behind turbo but its your own risk to blow it up. They can be found in NA models with manual transmission, with Forresters, Outback & Liberty only had AWD full time in high range (there is no "high" in normal mode, and does have low range) The low gearing is either 1.19:1 & 1.447:1 behind EJ engines. You can use 1.59:1 in EJ box with little mods, see my signature.

That doesnt make much sense to me

I was also unaware that EJ gearboxes came with a low ratio other than 1.19:1

Early Forester boxes (2L engine) had the 1.42:1, funny about Subaru blowing the low range in turbo engined cars as i always break a gear, 2nd or 3rd, and the low range gearing is uneffected.
