An Outback Story (Warning images may be distressing to some viewers...)
So, many of you may know that it has rained a little of the last couple of days here in (normally) sunny Coffs Harbour.
My wife recently had our second baby and I was visiting her at the hospital and had to leave to get my first son from daycare.
This is what I saw when I got to the car...
Oh darn, hopefully the door seals work....
nope...
And todays sad conclusion...
In the hands of the insurance company now....
I was more worried about the water that was 4m from the front door....

Holy christ! :O That sucks... shame it wasn't the pootrol instead of the suby I guess at least it would have been higher? Bad news anyways, hope it all goes well with the insurance mob.

Pretty sure that once a car has been underwater it is classed as a stat write off so can not be re rego'd.AlpineRaven wrote:Oh dear... I hate when that kind of thing happens... Depending on the outcome, Wifey wants another wagon either Liberty or Outback. Hard part is blow all the payout on a gen 4 or get another gen 3 and pocket some cash.... There are some Gen 4 GT wagons for around the payout value..... And you can't compromise the safety of the family can you, I mean those things have 6 airbags!Outback bloke wrote:Bloody hell, not good Ben. Hopefully it will be sorted quickly for you. Time for a current model H6 maybe?

Nah, that sort of thing would be fine for re-registration after some work's done on it. If its written off it'll probabily end up down here at pickles or some auction like that up there...gx_rex wrote:Pretty sure that once a car has been underwater it is classed as a stat write off so can not be re rego'd.
Sorry to hear that - you may have been fine with the lift, better get a snorkel on the next one Or park on higher ground whenever it rains.
On the note of rain, I wouldn't mind seeing some flooding down the paddock in the creek - haven't had a big one in years now... Biggest one was '91 or '93.
All the best with your decision (and the decision of the insurance company).
Cheers
Bennie
What a bitch, was wondering how you were getting on down there with the flooding, glad to hear your house is safe anyway, I say get the insurance payout, buy the Outback back from the insurance company nice and cheap and turn it into a play thing, then get rid of the Pootrol and buy a GT wagon for the family.

Would have needed 10" or more of total lift to avoid wet carpets. Even the patrol would have struggled to come out dry where the outback was. Keep in mind that the water height came up more than shown in the pics as the pics were about 3 hours before the peak flood height. There was water still in the cupholder, the spare tyre well was still full, the exhaust was full which means the engine had water sitting in it overnight, the diff breather was under water, there is electronics/modules that were under the water line, the auto ecu would have been under. These things will often work after they dry out, but they now have a layer of silt in them and a start of corrosion.El_Freddo wrote: Sorry to hear that - you may have been fine with the lift, better get a snorkel on the next one Or park on higher ground whenever it rains.
I am sure that someone with the right skills could bring it back, the problem is that insurance companies guarantee the repairs for life, which means that they remain liable for every electrical/rust/mechanical (possibly) gremlin the car ever gets, so if they write it off and sell the body which ends the liability for them.

Got a call from insurance company today and it has been written off. Just waiting on the claims people to finalise now. Out of interest I am going to get a buyback price just to see, if its stupid low I might just buy it and spend the time to clean it up - or part it, I want the MOMO airbag wheel in the patrol!

You could ask the insurance company that you would like to get payout and buy it back, i've done it before, wrote off my Camira, got 2grand pay out, bought it back for 250bucks and sold it for 2 grand! Then bought a Liberty from that.Ben wrote:Got a call from insurance company today and it has been written off. Just waiting on the claims people to finalise now. Worth a go, you could clean it up, whatever you've saved goes to clean up.

Insurance is settled, now officially looking for a new used car. Drove a Honda Accord Euro yesterday and they are awfully sweet...
Can't buy back a wreck of a flood damaged car through NRMA so if I want it I have to go to the auction like everyone else. Anyone that is looking for a pretty good Outback H6 120,000km that got a little wet.....
Will be sold at auction in Gateshead through Fowles auctions, haven't got a date though yet. Something like 900 cars were written in Coffs so it'll be a big one so will be an opportunity to pick up a bargain.
The car started and everything worked but will obviously need a BIG clean out.
Sunspares has an MY04 2.5 and a MY06 2.0 libs in the price range....
