How does this whole import thing work?

I am very interested to find out about this import from the states thing, how does it work, what are the rules, and what are the costs?

Does the car need to be pre-1989 build?

A few of mates have gotten cars from Japan, Supras and 180's and shiz, No idea what they paid to get the cars here but if you go to an importer it would be included in the cost. Car has to get bars welded in the doors and seatbelts changed and things like that to get it road registered in Australia.
