in a sequel to "where'd that rag come from...?"
The spare EA82T is in and running in the GLTA
It has sat in my shed for 18 months
In a previous life it sat in storage for a coupla years after being stripped from a Vortex fitted for an even more previous owner, as an import. So it is established this motor has a past.
Was a 4 plug ECU motor that was fitted up with a dizzy from a three plug and looks to have had its timing set to suit 4 plug dizzy, not the three plug. Think it was close to TDC not 20'. A typical base timing ? So may have been fitted by those that not understood the differences. The 4 plug vac line for dizzy was non existent, so currently running without vac advance
The cams are not matched pairs looking at its ID rings on each side
Tappets were noisy as until warmed up and a few revs and kms to make them real nice and quiet.
Runs OK, boost fels good when it comes on at 3000 so must have big hole plate under turbo as opposed to smaller under my other one.
Done about 50 km then took it for a run up a mountain. Felt a bit pooey sluggish and was not kicking down to second so... I pulled her down to second manually and gave it a bootful then suddenly noticed what may have caused concern for firetowers around
SMOKE absolutely pouring out the zaust.
A little earlier I encountered on boost smoke coming into the cabin via the clutch cable hole employed as boost gauge hole , found the RHS rocker cover breather (care of Supercheap) was the culprit so this has been fed into the air filter box.
Figuring this engine has sat around for such a long time that some piston rings may have just given up on their sealing duties and causing a bit of blow by. Given that these engines normally have well plumbed PCV all fumes are well burnt anyway. But for the amount of smoke it musta been pure oil going through. The only saving grace for the Subaru name is that not many saw what the smoke was coming from - it was that 007 smoke screen stuff , it was embarassing. Does not happen on boost on the flat
This whole exercise was to test the engine out so I know just what it is like. It gets normal boost at about 3000 instead of my other at about 2400. It gets up and boogies up to a nice 5000 and does not display any characteristics of my other engine (weak valve spring lifter pump style symptoms)
If you are reading this with wonder in mind if you should go for big hole or little hole where the turbo bolts onto cross over engine pipe, I like the spool up at 2400 so go the smaller holed.
It ran a bit warm for my liking and found most of that was due to a crapped out radiator cap. A better one has improved things, but again suspect coolant passages of head gasket may have gunked up.
Wondering if a higher detergent oil like a Diesel oil will help clear the rings and reduce the blow by - thoughts ?
Also a little odd is my boost light no longer works and as annoying as I thought it was , I now miss it . I am guilty I think as i have stripped the wiring plugs 2 of on the RHS down to just two wires to engine , oil pressure light and temp gauge. No efi wires at all - it s LPG. Didn't think I screwed up my light boost wires though. ??
So, if you are still reading...
what changes in the crancase under boost to cause more fumes to exit the PCV stuff ? Higher comp ratios blowing past all the ring sets ?
where'd that SMOKE come from....?

Found something new this morning. The slight lump in the idle (that I was yet to increase to spec) might be more due to comp readings tested at operating temp , 130psi in all three cylinders 1, 3 & 2 . Poor old number 4 has just 60 psi which likely to be reason why bit sluggish up to 3000 but you wouldn't pick it up as a miss other than at idle, maybe due to turbo comp ratios being low already.
So all I can say now is I'm happy I have tested it before needing it in good shape, and BUGGER. It is gonna need work and part$
