1992 L series

Post by stickball » Tue Dec 09, 2008 12:44 pm

Theirs one for sale at a private dealer for $3,000

I am just wanting to know your opinion on it, like whether the "price is right"
We took it for a test drive and heres a list of pro's/con's of the car

Pro's
-immaculate body
-immaculate interior
-177,000kms on the dial
-full service history until early 2007
-engine runs fine
-all heating/airconditioner works
-hazard lights don't work.. probably a fuse blown
-no oil leaks or leaks in general
-original tool set

Con's
-radio doesnt work (will replace it myself)
-bit of trouble getting it from 4wd back to fwd

Thats all that we found about the car. Does it sound okay for 3,000? when i go to look at it again tonight what should i look for?

Ill grab a couple snaps aswell later

Thanks in advance

yes thats a pretty good price! spesh with them km's

trouble from going to 4wd to fwd is just a l-series thing, they all do it.

get it! and dont listen to what other people say about getting liberty's, l-series is the way to go!

hey man

that doesnt sound too bad.

in regards to getting from 4wd to fwd, try reversing for about 5 meters, putting the clutch in and then trying. generally, these l-series get heaps of diff wind up. if u do this, then it should pop in easily.

i got mine for 2500, and the dealership put 6 months extra rego on.
again, it was immaculate interior and exterior, but was leaking from both rocker covers (not a problem to worry about). however, it had 350000 on the clock. allthough, it was still the best running motor ive seen.

i wouldnt worry too much about paying 3000. but u should be able to get a dealership down to about 2500. just go in at about 2000.

Jeee you guys are on the ball!
Thanks for your help! I'm looking for my first car so I'm just making sure I'm not getting stooged over.

I'll give it a whirl getting it down to $2,500 or lower and the whole 5m reverse
Thanks for your help!
Appreciated

G'day stickball,

The reverse trick doesn't always work, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't...

I'd go for the talk them down thing, at $3000 its already a great price, I've seen them over here for $5000 with more k's on the clock than the example you've discussed.

Check the undercarrage for dings from 4wd'n over rough terrain, I know mine has a few now. I'd say that by the sounds of it there are none but its always good to check...

Happy hunting.

Sounds like its in excellent condition, But I think now matter how good the condition and how low the ks are etc.
3k is just too much for these old cars. However, you can always talk dealerships down and negotiate something, get it for 2500 or under and it will be an awesome buy :)

It is late tonight. Did you get around to making an offer?

The sticking in 4WD may be a negotiating chip on our side. Maybe if that works ask to take for another drive - a decider, then if you can get one side on road the other on the edge strip of grass or dirt (the left side please , in Australia ) and see if that helps.

The whole value on cars this age is based on how good the motor is - especially to a dealer. Mine blew its head gasket due to the previous owner not attending to a ten dollar sticking thermostat - so i got it for $250 with some rego. Another thermostat allowed me to drive it with just a hint of head gsaket leaking into combustion chaber on start up. I have a job ahead of me

At the end of the day it is always your decision
:)

complete devastation

We went down to take another look at the bad boy and I was ultimately going to make my desicion. We rocked up and it wasn't in the lot, it had been sold!!! ARGH!
I reckon if I got to take another good look at it I would have bought it, but I guess I wasn't the only one interested :(

Theirs a few more in the area but they are all rust buckets
Lame

I'll just have to keep waiting

Thanks for the advice though, much appreciated!

Peace

Try Steve at Rising Sun Gepps X 8349 6960 - he may a couple or would probably know of a good one in the wind.

There is a real micky mouse one about for around $5000 with all the goodies thru the club (think around 120K Kms) - owned by a guy Karl in the club / steve will know of it if it hasn't been snapped up yet.

Also if you are unsure. a pre-inspection by him rather the RAA would be way to go.
