this was taken from the mag outback which i realy like to collect and read
I was working as a saddle maker in the prairie country of Nebraska,US,during the very cold winter of 1989.It was there that i had cause to remember some good bush advice from outback artist jack absolom. who i had heard on the radio several years earlier.Jack had some good tips, but the one that may have saved my life was how to start a manual car by hand.
A local cutting horse trainer had asked me to feed and water his stock while he was down in texas on business.Morning and night i would drive about five klm to feed his horses and cattle in my front wheel drive SUBARU.
One particular evening, the snow was horizontal. In the near darkness i watered the stock and made sure i drained the hose properly. When i got into the car to head for home. i dropped the key on the floor.By the time i picked it up and placed it in the ignition the key had become so cold that it went and froze the lock .
the ignition was on, but the lock wouldnt turn and with the snow getting heavier,i realized that this was about to get serious. Then Jacks advise came to mind.I put the car into top gear, jacked up the front wheel and spun it,and to my amazement the car started. By morning the switch had thawed, but not the weather. It had gotten down to minus 42 degrees celsius that night and i have no doubt that i would have been in big trouble if it hadnt been for jack absolom.
