From my experience, I don't recommend recon shafts, and do not buy Protex shafts for Subarus because they are not made right.

I use AutoForce, they are not the cheapest but they can be put in and forgotten about. They come with 60,000km warranty and are available from Sprint auto parts.

Thanks, I will see what Frog says. I don't want to mess around too much because it is not my car, I just want to see if it can be done and for what price so I can tell the guy who owns it.

Besides, I thought you needed power input to induce the LSD into working, or have I got that wrong? A viscous LSD will, but normally LSDs lock the rear axle until enough force causes them to slip, like when cornering with grip. As for the spare holder, I find it makes a nice little shelf to put too...

Subaru Forester air conditioner pulley

My friend has an issue with his air conditioner clutch on his Forester (2nd gen). He said it was making a lot of smoke and smelled bad, so the RAA guy cut off the AC belt.

I suppose it will need a new clutch. Can these be bought separately to the compressor?

Sounds like a good plan. It will be good to see the axles you get made. If it all works out, I will then need to find a way to do it with 3.90 gears. There must be stubs that fit an IRS diff and will also fit a locker. When you say the input splines work but the stub axels have no chance of working,...

Aren't these lockers used in IFS front diffs?

Sounds good.

It might be a while since I need to get my Datsun going before I can take the Subaru off the road and I want to get all the bits I need first.

Also I don't really know what I am doing but I won't let that stop me.

Ok, seems like I need to either find a r180 or r200 locker, and then get a corresponding diff with 3.90 gears. Then get driveshafts that fit or have some made. I will need a custom tailshaft anyway since I would be doing a 5 speed swap as well. Am I missing anything? Any major problems with this idea?

It would be good if the splines are the same, I will cross that bridge when I come to it. So the main hurdle is finding an r180 locker? Would I have better luck finding an air locker than an auto locker? Either one would do for me. An air locker would be pretty cool actually. And if I do find one, w...

Now that I think about it, an r180 locker would be better. I just have to work out what things I need to make it fit.

The first thing that comes to mind would be to get shafts that fit the diff, take the outer joints off, get the spline cut to match the MY outer joints and put them on. Uni joints instead of CVs would be ideal but I don't know if that is a realistic idea. People use r180 3.90 torsen diffs in Datsuns...

That doesn't seem like a bad thing since the normal male stubs seem to break easily. But would I need to use a different housing as well? I am quite interested in getting either a locker or a Torsen.

Torsen differential

Sorry if dumb question, but what is stopping me from just sticking a torsen diff in my MY wagon? I see there are R160 torsen diff centres available.

The book says 8 degrees, give or take 2.

I have mine at 6 which is still within spec, any more and it doesn't run right. I blame carbon buildup.

One day I will clean it and get some better fuel economy.

I've towed 750KG with an automatic L series running a 2inch exhaust and I gotta say the feeling was not fun I was nervous all the way and I couldn't climb hills faster than about 60KPH. With an MY towing 1600 KG you'd probably roll backwards down any hills assuming you don't break something..... No...

The braked towing is 700, or 750kg (i cant remember now), exceed that and you are breaking the law. If you have an accident and damage property or injure/kill someone, you are criminally responsible. Borrow a larger car like a falcon, commodore or a 4wd. Where did you find that? I read that 750 is ...

Seems more do-able than I first thought. If the Subaru weighs about 1000kg and the car and trailer weight about 1600kg, it is not breaking the law by too much, since it is a braked trailer. And the Subaru will be loaded up too so that should help it stay in control. Plus I have a lot of experience w...
