MCM Brumby build

For anyone who hasn't noticed, Australias best 4WD channel (lol) is doing a Brumby build! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut1bof-rNoE It's cool to see those guys handling parts that we've all handled a dozen times before and they're seeing it for the first time :D And the latest episode from this we...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

I keep forgetting things, like the fact that when I get stuck on what goes where on this engine I can just pop the bonnet of the Forester and have it all laid out  It has the same P/S pump, engine even looks the same but 2.5l. I'll have to get creative with the reservoir location I think. What ...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

This weekend I've kinda taken two steps back, two steps forward to end up back where I was at the start  Went to U-pull it again yesterday to get a P/S reservoir and some lines but me being a dummy didn't even take a photo of my P/S pump and of course I grabbed the wrong one  Then rememb...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Reading through those old threads...it slowly dawns on me I've read them all before but back then had not the feintest idea what any of them were about  Now I understand. From what I can tell, what I'm going for is what Donkeytits1 describes on page 5 of AlpineRavens thread I can confirm that t...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Always appreciate your input Bennie ;) Up till now I've been going off info from a couple of guys locally, Jordan being one and the other a guy called Matt who's also built an L/EJ hybrid box for his ute. The vid I'm on about is in a closed group, might be difficult to share it through FB. So for a ...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

I may yet pull the intake and get it treated, there is time while I do all the other work. The EJ flywheel I bought separately from a Subaru wrecker, didn't think to ask for the flywheel bolts as well   The adapter plate is a home made jobbie that I bought years and years ago for Dad's (n...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

It's in! https://i.imgur.com/5pWeQJW.jpg Brought the engine home Friday afternoon and tore into the job of beeping out all the wiring in the grey and brown engine harness plugs, which wire goes were to connect the ECU up. Made myself a mud map that all took a couple of hours. Was geared up...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

I reckon you’ll find that 8mm fuel line overkill. I reckon you're right   I should have gotten the Forester fuel pump hanger before I ordered that stuff; the outlet is 6mm at best, but with the barb/bulb on the end it necks down to 5mm! on EJ25! All the online research I did said stock E...

Re: Whoops - 1985 MY wagon addition!

Oh those pics bring back memories  Something about yours threw me off a bit...now I realized it has a grey touring wagon interior on a non-touring body, and with the non-touring dash/instruments. Fun and games. This is where you realize there's a lot more to do than on a Brumby. There's almost...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Thanks for the offer of support Bennie. It's all under control now though, problem is solved with one little invention called a bulkhead fitting ;) Was ranting about my problem at work (with two other car guys we regularly share weekend shed stories) boss says, "why not just use a bulkead fitting?" ...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

I did send a question to Haltech about that and got a reply this week. The short answer is no, still need a mechanical fuel pressure regulator...What's the point of all this programmable everything ECU and sensors and PWM fuel pump if I still need to rely on an archaic mechanical spring device to ma...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Heh, yeah it's been a few years since I took an engine out so had to re-learn one or two things  Wasn't pushing hard either. And the lights are fantastic, I'm still amazed every time I turn them on. In the little shed now I can see better at night than I ever could even during the day, can actu...

Re: Whoops - 1985 MY wagon addition!

Exciting! I've never had mine throw flames from the carbie(s) before, that timing must have been way off  It's always the ignition system on these engines that people set up wrong or neglect, always causes problems. Sam, any leads on where to source new window rubbers for the windscreen, side a...

The engine swap is officially underway this weekend, the blue wagon has driven it's last km under EA81 power :o Took it to get the A/C gas vacuumed out after work yesterday and then the drive home was the last. Re: Brumby torsion bar

I've had the torsion bars out of my wagon once years ago. From memory all I did was undo the 3 bolts holding it to the trailing arm and then there are 1 or 2 bolts in the housing tube that clamp onto the rubber bush at the outer ends of the torsion bar housing. Then you *just* have to pull the assem...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Just my opinion but I think a Haltech upgrade/swap is going to be easier than re-purposing the factory ECU and wiring :o The Elite 750 has only a single connector 34(?) pins and I won't even be using every pin. A couple dozen wires only into the engine bay and adding a fuse or two for the ECU power ...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Thanks Bennie  It's going to be good can't wait to get started. There's one simple fact that decided a few things about which engine, ECU to use etc and that is; I already had this engine sitting around the side of the house for about 4 years now  (this is why not the EJ25) But with littl...

A fishing weekend on Yorke Peninsula

Got back today from a kind-of last minute getaway to Yorke Peninsula for a spot of fishing. Decided to go and booked the camping on Wednesday night not realizing it was a public holiday monday...oh great huge crowds I thought  Still really glad I went, haven't been to Yorkes in such a long tim...
