Re: Red Targa Brumby

With the carb, original Hitachi? If you can still get a kit for them the rebuild is easy enough for an afternoon. Last one I did for my ute (yonks ago) ran like a swiss watch afterward. Can confirm; My cream brumby sat for a few years, then was a dog to move at all: I think the primary jet was bloc...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

That's amazing... Don't think I'd do it. As for testing, fill it with water, and then pressurize. The water can't compress so there's no energy being stored. Unlike air. I recommissioned an old air compressor, and wondered how to make sure the tank is safe. The professional tank testers use nothing ...

Re: G'day from a new Brumby tragic!

Sorry can't help on the diagrams. Yes, the last of the carby cars suck when it comes to vacuum/emission hoses.

You've done some great work since having it. Makes me feel lazy :(

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Agreed on the exhaust situation: I grabbed a EJ22 the other week. When I was unloading it at home, it hit me... Where's the exhaust???? I must of had brain fade, because I'd looked at the heads to make sure it was the dual port head (eventually I'd like it turbo'd), but never clicked the exhaust was...

Re: 89 Targa Brumby

Thanks Bennie! That makes it an easy decision: Next spare day, get that box then :)

Yes, interesting about the rust: Surprising how bad the a pillars are. Oh well, it's well worth saving, it's the best EA81 I've owned too!

Re: 89 Targa Brumby

I've got a Dual Range ej 5speed and rear diff, with 3.9 diff ratios. Thing is, I've found another 5 speed with the 3.9 ratio, but the rear diff is already gone: Does anyone know if any of the auto's or single range 5speed Subaru's have 3.9's so I can grab a matching diff for it? Restoring/building t...

Re: Whoops - 1985 MY wagon addition!

Getting there Benny, good work. Those EGR blocks.... Always suck to repair on high mileage ones, as they often pull the threads out... On my first Brumby, a 10,000km old 92 model (a long time ago) I kept blowing those damn gaskets: My tradeschool teacher told me to use silicon on them (not exhaust p...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

IIRC the reason we didn't do a full loom swap was because they were two total different trim levels (power windows/mirrors seats etc, where as the aus cas isn't), being a jap import, even the dash cluster is different (jap one has max 180km/h) etc. So merging the two looms is the best/easiest/safest...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Ain't no shame in using an aftermarket ECU, the flexibility will be a blessing. Backwards engineering a wiring loom into a different vehicle, isn't that much fun, unless it's like some of the nissan/mitsubishi etc where the engine harness is it's own thing. When my mate converted his patrol from car...

Re: EJ hydraulic clutch to cable clutch for EA chassis conversions

Awesome, thank you. I better check, but I'm confident that Gen 1 box I got was a 3.9 I'm working on two brumby's slowly... My targa is the 'good one'... my other is gonna ge the beater/hopefully daily: I'm thinking I'll use the L series 5spd in that, and leave as 4 stud to wear out all the 13 inch t...

Re: Silverbullets' resto: Engine, gearbox, suspension

Nice job on the wiring. Can confirm subaru ECU wiring is NOT conversion friendly. Many years ago (~2008 IIRC) I was given the task of a full swap of JDM 2nd gen sequential turbo (I can't remember now if it was the EJ20H or the EJ20R, I think it was the R.... I'll explain). The car came over in 2 hal...

Re: EJ hydraulic clutch to cable clutch for EA chassis conversions

Yes, thanks for that. I was watching some guys WRX/brumby build, and he'd used a hydraulic clutch etc... what a nightmare... I've got a gen1 liberty D/R box sitting in the garage, and I'm just thinking, why not keep it cable??? Turns out, that's good thinking :) Quick question, I believe it's the 3....

Re: 1992 project Brumby from Finland

For the front struts/shockers, here in Aus I bought genuine, height adjustable ones. I might be able to find the part numbers, see if you can get them from your local subaru or a jap exporter? They were same price as kyb etc. but height adjustable :)

Re: Brumby Antenna

Thanks, I'll sit down with a vernier and tape measure and see what I can match up...
Although, I might try genuine: I'm often surprised with suby stuff: For example, I got genuine front struts (height adjustable!!!) for less than the aftermarkets that aren't adjustable.

Re: 1992 project Brumby from Finland

I'm in Australia, and I've never found a local source of rear drums: But I too, did see them on rockauto: I didn't order them through.

My theory is, when I run out of drums, I'll do a rear disc conversion (using EJ stuff, it's plentiful).

Re: Red Targa Brumby

Nice! I haven't logged on in ages.... The SOHC engine, being turbo'd is something I've been thinking of for about 12-18months now. And given the price of WRX's/turbo liberties/foresters, this will probably happen in my world too. I've got another project I got to finish first, but watching this with...
