do yourself a favour and go out and buy 2 tools...
6mm short pin punch
6mm long pin punch

use the short one to get those really stuck roll pins started and then use the long one to knock em through

with those you get a good purchase on the pin and just belt them with a big hammer

ive heard things about people using porsche cv joints on custom axles in many applications, so they might be the go?
