Sorry for the stupid question, but when you buy a new ball joint, does it come complete with the steering arm? I'm assuming that's why they can't be tightened or adjusted... because the ball is captive in the housing? I went over an unexpected speed hump a bit hard the other day and it seems it was ...

Just as a warning to others... a few weeks ago, one of the cam belt tensioner bearings started whining. Ideally, you would change these when you put in new belts, as the new belts often put a little more pressure on the old bearings. Unfortunately I wasn't asked if I wanted the "kit" installed, so t...

I've noticed a couple of people say there are common negatives in the L-Series, but mine definitely has independant wires run... not sure why though, because the speakers I replaced looked pretty original (I think they were 25 watt clarion dual cones, but I only glanced at them as they sailed gracef...

One manual I have is for a Kenwood unit (died with the "protection" message)... the one I just bought is a Gearflag. Both manuals just assume you have 4 speakers... which I guess is fair enough, since that would normally be my preference... with a decent 12 inch sub woofer. I'll give the 8 ohm resis...

L Series - front speakers only - wiring query

Basically my question is, when running 2 front speakers only (it's a wagon), what do you do with the surplus wires from the head unit for the rear speakers (at the moment I just have the rear speaker wires covered and turned the fader full up to the front speakers). In the past, I was told that you ...

Bug screen on L Series radiator

Hey everyone, I'm doing a bit of a country trip in a couple of weeks and wondered if anyone has fitted a bug screen to their bull bar and how it impacted on the air flow/cooling. Should I bother? Apparently there are a lot of loccusts our there at the moment! I had a new radiator fitted to my 92 L S...

Got the car back... everything seems good, although I seem to be getting a lot more pinging down low, so the timing still seems a bit out, but nothing to really worry about. I didn't bother asking what they meant by "the timing on one of the banks went out". From the belt I did on my old escort, the...

Thought I'd better give everyone an update. I managed to get back to the car and confirmed the rotor button definitely wasn't turning. I've only had the car 12 months, and because it wasn't the original EA82 engine, I never knew how many k's it had on it. Fortunately (I guess), I could get it to a m...

Yeah, I hear ya. If I had it in my drive, I would definitely give it a shot... but it's over $150 bucks to get it towed home... add to that I've never changed a timing belt and don't have a particularly good record for anything more than a pad or oil change. Pity, but what can you do.

Thanks for the tip.

Is this a big job... would a mobile mechanic be able to do it?

I had to leave the car on the side of the road. But I'll go back tomorrow and rip the dizzy cap off and have a look.

92 L Series - won't start

Hi All, I'm hoping someone can give me a few tips. My EA82 L-Series cut out while accerating from the lights today. The battery came loose, but everything was still connected. I still had accessories, but found there is no spark from the coil. I put a multimeter over all the fusable links, and they ...

92 L Series front pad change

Okay, so I've never done a front pad change on a Subaru before. In virtually every other car, it has been a simple case of pushing the brake piston back, but apparently the front handbrake system makes things more interesting in the L Series. My specific question involves the instruction "wind the p...

Yeah, I must admit, I've got the pump technique pretty sorted out now... although I've filled it to the brim on a couple of ocassions and ended up wearing a splash of unleaded. As a cologne, it has good staying power, but not much appeal.

L-series fuel tank filling issues

Does anyone have any problems filling up their L-Series? I find that the automatic cut off at service stations doesn't let me put more than a slight press off the trigger to fill the car up. I've seen people fill up with LP Gas quicker than it takes me to fill my tank! I'm guessing it's because ther...

I agree with Steptoe. My 92 L Series was making the same noise and my mechanic was pretty sure it was one of the hydraulic lifters. Mine actually got worse after an oil change. I stuck with the normal 20-50 oil and used some of the Wynns(? - I think) lifter cleaner stuff and it stopped the problem a...

My 92 L-Series was doing exactly the same thing. It was spewing water out the overflow as soon as I did highway driving and the temp was going up to 3/4 on the gauge. I checked that the thermo fan was cutting in normally and tried a new thermostat. In my case, the radiator needed replacing. I found ...
