How do you actually know it is a HG? This seems like a pretty interesting thing to report back from a RWC certificate job. Did they tell you how they found it? I had a foray into classic Mercedes for a while. I am a big fan of their diesels and had a really nice diesel wagon for a while.
But... I am really getting used to 190kw of flat six power cruising over the Blue Mountains! It is much more "efficient" than 85hp in a straight 5 diesel.

Have you tried tightening the hub bolt? I can't think what kind of force would be required to bust the spline!!!
