thanks for all the advice. Finaly had to stop the engine turning by putting a bar into the drive plate bolt holes, and used a 3 foot "extension" on my breaker bar. Did the trick, but I was a bit worried for a while there!

Thank you chubby37. I will try using a longer "breaker bar"

It stands to reason if the engine turns clockwise, the "main" bolt will turn anti-clockwise to undo.

Just checking before I bring in the big guns!!!!!!

I must say the bolt is effing tight:mad:

ohc bearing caps

Hi again folks. I am doing the head gaskets on a '98 Rx Liberty- 2.5L - non turbo. I am pretty sure I will need to remove the camshafts to remove and replace the head bolts. I do have a manual, a Haynes manual, but I cannot seem to find anywhere the tension for the camshaft bearing caps! Can someone...

Thanks Outback bloke, it does seem really weird, as I have never had to do the head bolts that way before. I wasn't sure if it was a misprint!!

Do you know why that is done, by any chance?

engine out

Hi there folks. I am about to pull out the engine on a '98 Liberty Rx in order to do the head gasket/s. I do have a manual, but I need to confirm one or two things: according to the manual, when doing up the head bolts, one does them to a tension ( I forget exactly what it is) and then RELEASES the ...

I don't think it is an airlock as I have been putting in water for about a month now at the rate of about a 1 1/2 to 2 litres a week :(

o.k., sounds pretty straightforward: unbolt the drive plate and make sure as you remove the engine that the converter doesn't follow the engine. Looks like there are no major tricks I might add that this came about after a radiator flush that was done by a "reputable" radiator crowd here in Airport ...

O.K., I get the idea :D I could also toss a coin I guess. My manual says to pull the engine and leave the tranaxle in the car. Is the any difficulty with the torque converter falling/moving with the engine out? I also gues if I leave the drive plate attached to the converter, there shouldn't be any ...

head gasket

Hi there ppl. I am a new member and have a 1989 Liberty Rx AWD auto I think it has a blown head gasket, as it is loosing water, with no apparent indication of coolant on the driveway or over the engine, nor any "wet" smells inside the car. I am adding coolant at about a litre a week. Not o/heating t...
