The main thing is the cable is cheap/free for most people, and this program is free. More to the point it wasn't designed to work with USB.
You could get other software to work via USB, but you might need to pay for it.

well considering my old lifted L was a liberty in a lifted L series body, this should go alright. and i've got the vortex with the same running gear, you could say i like ej22's. and bennie my old L cost $1250 and then i sunk some money into it, plus rego. this was $50 more with rego just needs lift...

Old laptops are only about $50 on gumtree if that, doesn't even need a hard drive because your booting from a USB.
